Topic: Extreme Earth
During this half term the Year 6 topic is 'Extreme Earth'. We will be writing setting and character descriptions as well as biographies about famous daredevils. Our text for the half term is 'Queen of the Falls' by Chris Van Allsburg, which focuses on the story of Annie Taylor and her adventures at Niagara Falls. During our topic, we will be looking at extreme weather events and natural disasters around the world. This will include mapping the world's tectonic plates and climate zones. We look in more depth at the water cycle and how climate can affect human activities across the globe. In addition, we will be learning about the valuable work that aid agencies do and we also complete some art work based on 'The Great Wave' by Hokusai. Our role-play area has been changed into a weather station, where the children can take on the role of a scientist.

Topic: Tales from the Arabian Nights
In this History based topic, children will study Baghdad as a civilisation from 570 AD. Children will look at the changes over time and the major historical events that have had a critical impact on the country. The text we are focusing on for this topic are 'Tales from the Arabian Nights', with a particular focus on one of these stories being Aladdin and the Enchanted lamp. In English we will read the text, understanding the meaning of new and unfamiliar language, write our own Arabian stories and create newspaper reports of some of the major events that happened. In art and design, we will look at the complex patterns that are created in many of the buildings and art work of the country.

Topic: Prince Caspian
The topic for this half term is Prince Caspian. In this History based topic, children will link their topic work to the text we will study in English and will also be exposed to other reading materials which relate to the Battle of Hastings. The text chosen for this term is 'Prince Caspian' (Chronicles of Narnia) by C.S. Lewis. With this text, we will look at persuasive writing, balanced arguments and descriptive writing.
In Design and Technology lessons, children will have the opportunity to analyse and investigate a range of historical armour. They will have the opportunity to design, make and evaluate products using a wide range of materials and components.
In Dance, children will have opportunities to create, evaluate and perform their own dances, they will use and respond to a variety of stimuli. Computing will allow the children to use tools to adapt and create documents. They will have the opportunity to develop their confidence and knowledge on the World Wide Web.

Topic: A Tropical Adventure
Our topic this half term is A Tropical Adventure. The text chosen for this term is 'Kensuke's Kingdom' by Michael Morpurgo. With this text we will look at first person accounts as Michael finds himself stranded on this lonely island. Newspaper reports for the families missing child and non-chronological reports of some of the animals living on this deserted island. In Geography children will look at maps and study the geographical features of a land and compare different areas of the world. We will study the Amazon rainforest including the living things living there and the natural habitats they find themselves in. Then looking at deforestation and the effects of people on these living habitats around the world; looking at how we can begin to prevent these damages. In Art and Design and Technology, children will have opportunities to build ships like that of the Peggy Sue and test them out scientifically to see whose can sail the stormy waters the best. Children will study famous artists who have created scenes of the rainforest, using these artist's styles to create our own.'

Term: Autumn 1
Topic: World War 2
During this half term we will be basing our learning on World War Two. We will be exploring a range of genres through reading and writing. We will be writing setting descriptions, letters and diary entries. We will be reading extracts of the novel of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and will watch the film version of this in order to make comparisons - if you would not like your child to watch this film please let me know. In Maths we will continue to extend and challenge ourselves within the number topic, we will look at SATs problems and focus on fractions, decimals and percentages. In our topic lessons we will be looking at countries that were involved in WW2, why the war begin and what is would be like to be a child in the war.
