Topic Overview Summer 2 Newsletter Term: Summer 2
Topic: An Eye on London

During our final half term, Year 4 will be exploring our capital city, London. In English, we will be developing our persuasive writing and diary writing from a character's perspective. We will be developing our ability to write sentences with more than one clause and also use the possessive apostrophe correctly for plural nouns. Our History focus will be on key events in recent history and for Geography, we will be learning about the counties which surround the city of London. We are excited for our residential to London on Monday 2nd July.

Topic: Stig of the Dump

This half term, Year 4 will be exploring the environment as they read 'Stig of the Dump' by Clive King. In English, we will be developing our narrative writing through the genres of narrative diaries and imaginary setting story writing, focussing particularly of writing sentences with more than one clause and using the possessive apostrophe correctly for plural nouns. Our Geography focus will be on identifying human and physical characteristics and land-use patterns for our local area, considering how it has changed over time, including any environmental issues. We will be visiting the Recycling Centre on Wednesday 23rd May.

Topic: The Titanic

This half term, Year 4 are embarking on an amazing journey into the past aboard the Titanic! We will delve into the history surrounding this unfortunate vessel and be studying the accounts of a number of children who on aboard. We are very excited about visiting the Titanic Exhibition at the Maritime Museum in Liverpool on Monday 5th March to find out more about the event and about Captain Smith in order to write his biography.

Topic: Magical Matilda

Our marvellous topic for this half term is 'Magical Matilda'. During English we will reading Roald Dahl's wonderful book and be exploring character and setting descriptions and narrative writing. We will also be developing our skills with writing persuasive/balanced arguments. In Maths we will be extending and challenging ourselves with number, specifically improving our understanding of fractions and how to tackle increasingly complex problems, as well as continuing to learn our times tables. As part of Geography we will be looking at lines of latitude and longitude and finding out the differences between the United Kingdom, Great Britain and the British Isles. As part of our Science work we will be investigating solids, liquids and gases and how we change the state of different materials. We are looking forward to the visiting Magician on Friday 19th January.

Topic: Wind in the Willows

Our exciting topic this half term is Wind in the Willows. During English we will be exploring Mystery and Suspense story writing, formal letter writing and instruction writing. In our Maths lessons we will be extending and challenging ourselves when working with number, specifically learning how to tackle word problems, fractions and converting between analogue and digital time. As part of our Geography, we will be looking at different types of maps including aerial and ordinance, as well as looking at what it is like to live in a village. As part of our Science work we will be investigating living things and how they can be grouped using classification keys.

Topic Overview Autumn 1 Newsletter Term: Autumn 1
Topic: Radical Romans

This half term our exciting topic will be 'Radical Romans'. We will be reading the texts 'Roman Record', and 'Escape from Pompeii'. We will be writing our own newspaper report about the Romans and trying to persuade Boudicca to allow us to join her army in their fight against the Romans. In Maths we will be learning the Roman Numerals. During the afternoons, we will be finding out about the expansion of the Roman Empire and the impact it had on Britain, including the resistance the Romans encountered. We will also create Roman art using mosaics and develop our sewing skills to make a Roman purse. During this topic, we also have our exciting visit to the Dewa Museum in Chester.
