Topic Overview Summer 2 Newsletter Term: Summer 2
Topic: Nearby and Afar

During this Half Term we will be basing our learning on Around the World in 80 Days. Our Role play has been transformed into Gladstone pottery museum and is full of lots of interactive reading, mathematics and writing activities. In English, we will be writing our very own adventure story and newspaper reports. In Maths, we will be learning about geometry, position and direction, the four operations, length, weight, capacity and fractions. In Science, we are focusing on plants, identifying and describing the functions of different parts of flowering plants, explore the requirements for the life and growth of a plant and investigating how water is transported around plants. In Geography, we will be locating different countries around the world, locating different cities around the UK and completing a comparison between Stoke-on-Trent and the Lake District. In Computing, we will be continuing our learning of E-safety and using a variety of software and range of digital devices to create our own programmes, systems and content. In P.E we will be focusing on Athletics to develop our flexibility, strength, techniques and control. In Dance we will be creating our own dance inspired by the inside workings of Gladstone pottery museum. In R.E, we will be exploring the questions 'Why are festivals important to religions?'.

Topic: A Shakespearian Tale

During this Half Term we will be basing our learning on William Shakespeare's Macbeth. Our Role play has been transformed into Shakespeare's Globe theatre and is full of lots of interactive reading, mathematics and writing activities. In English, we will be writing our own play scripts, setting descriptions and character descriptions. Children will also have the opportunity to create their very own Haiku poems and Cinquain poems. In Maths, we will be focusing on mental addition and subtraction, measurement, statistics, time, fractions, ratio and proportion. In Science our focus this Half Term is light. In Art and Design we will be exploring the primary colours, creating montages and painting portraits of characters from Macbeth. In History, we will investigate what life was like when Shakespeare was alive and will create a timeline of Shakespeare's life. In P.E, we will be participating in competitive games and learning how to play Rounders. In Computing, we will be constructing our own emails and adding attachments to these emails. We will also explore the 'Paint' program to create our own image. In Music, we will study periods of Music over time, and begin to think about how different pieces of music makes us feel. In R.E, we will be exploring the question 'What does it mean to be a Christian in Britain today?'. In PSHE, we will be learning how to keep safe.

Topic: The First Drawing

During this half term, we are basing our learning on three books: Stone Age Boy, The First Drawing and Stonehenge. Our role play has been transformed into a mud hut where we have the opportunity to research The Stone Age, engage in Stone Age mathematics and practise our cave drawings. In English, we will be writing out own adventure narrative. We will also be learning how to write our own letters. In Maths, we will be learning about the four operations (+ - x ÷), time, fractions, money, geometry and statistics. In Science, we will leaning about rocks and soils. In Computing, we will be learning how to create a PowerPoint presentation to tell our friends all about The Stone Age. We will also start to explore how to copy and paste a range of image and text into Publisher. In Geography, we will be finding out about earthquakes and how volcanoes are formed. In History, we will be creating fact files about The Stone Age and creating a timeline. In Art, we will explore different sketching techniques and discuss why they are used. Then we will sketch our own cave drawing. In French, we will be learning how to describe our school. In PE, we will focus on invasion games. In Music, we will be creating a musical accompaniment to show movement of people from The Stone Age.

Topic: All the Fun of the Circus

During this half term we will be using Leon and the Place Between as our class text and our role play will be transformed into a Big Top, full of lots of exciting activities. In English, we will be writing persuasive arguments and our own mystery and suspense narrative. In Maths, we will be learning about fractions, measurement of weight, length, temperature and capacity, geometry, statistics, time and reasoning and problem solving. In computing, we will be learning about how to stay safe when using the internet. We will also learn how to program a bee-bot. In Geography, we will be learning how to use a compass and how to describe the physical features of a locality. In Design and Technology, we will be using different textiles to create a rhythmic gymnastics stick. In French, we will be learning how to describe our appearance. In PE, we will be focusing on gymnastics.

Topic: Alice in Wonderland

During this half term we will be basing our learning on Alice in Wonderland. In English, we will be writing instructions for different recipes, creating our own Alice in Wonderland themed narratives and writing non-chronological reports about food origins. In Maths, we will be learning about money, statistics, time, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions and properties of shape. In Science, we will be learning about animals including humans. In Computing, we will be learning about how to stay safe using the internet. We will then learn how to edit different images, and use cameras to take photographs. In Geography, we will be learning all about the maps, symbols and grid references. We will be locating different places on a map and using symbols to describe a locality. In Design and Technology, we will be designing our own healthy food plates, and also preparing and cooking food. We will also spend time learning about food safety. In French, we will be learning the French names for different foods. In PE, we will be using dance movements to show the mood of a piece of music from Alice in Wonderland.

Topic: Gruesome Gods

During this half term we will be basing our learning on the Gruesome Gods. Our role play will be transformed into a Greek Temple, full of lots of books, writing activities, maths activities and art activities. During our lessons, we will be writing character and setting descriptions, as well as a narrative based on one of the Greek myths in English. We will use the computer to research and create a PowerPoint based on our findings of the Greeks and present this to the class. In History, we will be learning all about the Greeks and their influence they have had on us today. We will also become potters and create our own Greek pots.
